These Autopia works combine the lyrical curves of modern California freeway intersections with mythical rural landscapes from nearly a century ago. From a slow moving blimp or helicopter, I photographed select interchanges, then digitally enhanced them, often adding exotic cars, and in some cases changes the shapes and configurations of the freeway lanes. The image were then painted over using expressive brushwork, shifting horizon lines, altered perspectives, and vibrant colors. They show my influence of Wayne Thiebaud’s Sacramento River Delta series, Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park works, and David Hockney's early Los Angeles landscapes.
